Railing
Series
Railing is an exploration of structural modular loops to form furniture. Featuring four elements from the collection: two chairs, a love seat and a stool. These objects are presented in both silicone foam and hand-sewn leather upholstery.
Each piece of furniture is a single loop made up of many circles. The circle does not display the qualities it is most known for, but rather what a circle can be. It is not whole or complete but is instead growing into itself. It is a circle that refuses its own dimension and finitude, that struggles to be endless.
This system allows all distinct pieces to be created from the same set of modular stainless steel pipe arcs. The upholstery wraps the metal in a selection of colors and materials, extending the material language of handle-bar grips into a loopy dimension.
R1
This series continues our research into modularity through a novel language of arcs. Though the pieces in the collection vary in size, shape, function and complexity, each one carries the same logic of a single line that curves through a lattice of fractal circles and comes back to itself to form a continuous loop.
The first edition of the Railing Series is a chair that spreads its base to become a center piece.
R2
The stool can be used on its own or as an ottoman to the R1 or R3. It wraps around a single polyhedral unit.
R3
The side chair come in a variety of materials and is the more compact version of the chair. It’s arcs span two units.
R4
A special edition Loveseat commissioned by Gallery Nina Johnson. It hosts two seats slightly gazing at each other. The loops span over 4 polyhedral units.
